Apple releases iPhone 3.0.1 software update in response to SMS exploit

If you're an iPhone user, you've probably heard or read about the security flaw that has had the web in a frenzy over the last couple days.
Well, Apple has just released the latest sofware update - Firmware 3.0.1 in response to a security hole that was discovered this week by that left all iPhone users (regardless of which gen phone or which software) susceptible to an 'SMS attack' that could allow hackers to access a number of features including the camera, dialer, messaging and Safari.

New iPod Cases Suggest Camera on Touch and Nano

It's been widely rumored that the next version of the iPod Touch and iPod Nano to be released by Apple will have cameras inside. Now, a series of photos from Chinese iPod case manufacturers suggest that it's more than just speculation.

The Cult of Mac blog has obtained a stack of photos of what it describes as "the worst-kept secret in China." The images show multiple case designs for an iPod Touch and an iPod Nano with notches out of the material, which suggest a camera, much like the way cases for the iPhone accommodate that device's shooter.

For the iPod Touch cases, the camera slot is centered--unlike the iPhone's--while the Nano case camera slot is situated toward the bottom on the left. The Nano also appears to have a wide-screen display.
Most Apple observers anticipate the company will hold its annual iPod and music event in September, where in addition to a camera, the iPod Touch is expected to be updated with a microphone and digital compass as well

Well I know this isn't game or technology related but come on, its the taco bell dog we all grew up with!

She charmed millions without ever saying a word — and managed to make fast-food tacos adorable. Gidget, the Chihuahua best known for her Taco Bell ad campaign (and her famous overdubbed tagline, "Yo Quiero Taco Bell"), died from a stroke on Tuesday night at age 15.

"She made so many people happy," says Gidget's trainer, Sue Chipperton. "When she's on a set, she comes alive," Chipperton said at the time. But when the mostly retired canine actor wasn't joining her trainer on shoots, the 15-year-old was happy to just kick back. "She goes on hikes with me and she loves the sun," said Chipperton, who added that Gidget was happy to sleep "for 23 hours and 45 minutes a day. She'll lay outside when it's 105 degrees! I like to joke that it's like looking after a plant."

In addition to her gig as spokesdog for Taco Bell, Gidget appeared in a commercial for the '90s edition of Trivial Pursuit and played Bruiser's mom in Legally Blonde 2 (Moonie, the dog who played Bruiser, was her best friend and sometime roommate at Chipperton's house).

Other than a few other small cameos, Gidget's working life didn't continue much beyond her Taco Bell legacy. But she left quite an impression. "One time, I kid you not, she actually pushed her stand-in out of the way because he was still there when she arrived on set," Chipperton recalled with a laugh. "Gidget always knew where the camera was."

Activision and Treyarch have announced that Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 3 will be released in August for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Map Pack 3 will feature three new multiplayer maps (Battery, Revolution and Breach), and one new Zombie map (Der Riese).

The release of Map Pack 3 follows the two previous Map Packs which have sold four million copies on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and PlayStation Network combined. Call of Duty: World at War has sold over 11 million units to date across all platforms.

The day the world stopped spinning..

So it is like impossible for me to have some electronic gadget for a long time without it dyeing or freaking out on me, which then I have to send a way for repairs!

The image above is not my iPod exactly but it mind as well be, I haven't even had my new iPod Touch 2G for a month and the battery decides to malfunction and not want to charge for me; it also has 2 dead pixels on it, well that are ether dead or stuck but I was going to ignore it but then my battery decided to go wacko on me so then I decided to call Apple. They were very polite on the phone I have to give them that because if you call a lot of calling centers you know how some of them can be. I mistakenly called the U.S number and the female told me i was in the wrong section and she was transferring me over to the Canadian help center, from there I talked to a male and I told him about my battery not wanting to charge and he asked me a series of questions which I tried such as factory restoring my iPod which did me no good; then to sync it to another computer which I tried after I talked to him but still nothing worked. I then mentioned to him about the dead pixels and he went from troubleshooting me to getting my information to send a box to package the iPod up to return and get an exchange for a new one if it could not be fixed; I was generous for getting these people who actually care about there customers and want to help them out as best as they can.

So I guess the whole end of the story is that now I have an iPod touch I can not use, and I'm waiting for there box in the mail to ship it to them in which case I hope does not take long because this was a birthday gift and I would actually like to use something I got and not to just look at. I will probably update this on what happens when it happens.

iPod Touch 3.0 Firmware LEAKED!

Ok from what information I collected around the interwebs iPhone and iPod Touch Firmware (os) 3.0 will have copy paste feature including new features some others might like more.

This update it to be release hopefully June 10th, 2009 so watch for it. The bottom picture's are images of what some "beta testers" have seen before the official release date.

The home screen looks the same, with some tiny differences (one not shown in the screenshot, but the app is shown later)

mainly the only difference is that you got a tiny spotlight icon on the bottom page indicator, if you slide to the left you get access to spotlight:

this thing searches everything by default. Mail, contacts, sms (if your on a iphone), music, bookmarks, and history. Now the second biggest new thing for iPod users is Voice Memo's (don't if iphone had this)

It does require a iPhone headset or the new Shuffle headset(with the controls), and works quite simply just press the red button and record, press the listing and you can view the recordings you’ve done.

Now, back to spotlight a bit:

from left to right, first is mail-to, this links to the itunes page of the podcast you’re listening to, use this to for example tell friends about how awesome someone is, second is used to jump 30 secs back, which is pretty nice, instead of the 10 sec, last is podcast speed, this setting allow you to speed up a bit (twice as fast, or half speed), useful if you can’t be bothered to use the next function:

Scrubbing, you could do this before too, but only at real-time speed, which made it hard to fine scrub to the place you wanted to listen/watch from, so by sliding your finger down from the bar you can control the scrubbing speed.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST!

Bluetooth! I haven’t gotten it to work properly yet, but I’m not even sure if it’s supposed to work yet (kind of like MMS in beta 1-2 for iphone) now there is a new feature on the main settings menu, called store, this is ment to let you get a quick overview of your itunes account, not that good looking yet (just a badly formatted embedded webkit view) and not functional.

iPod Touch 2G Review

The iPod Touch 2G is the second generation of the iPod touch family and has been doing great ever since the first release of the iPod touch 1G. The iPod touch ranges on different prices depending on which GB model you wish to go with, it can range from $239.99 for the smallest model 8GB up to about $399.99 for the highest model which is the 32GB; what ever model you wish to go with they all come with the same features and same sleek sexy look.

The iPod touch 2G comes preloaded with the following applications: Safari, Calendar, Mail, Contacts, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Clock, Calculator, Notes, Settings, and of course the app store. None of the preloaded applications can be removed as far as I know but they can be moved around easily with the touch of your finger to what ever way you wish to have them.

Now you are probably asking what is the difference between the first generation iPod touch to the second generation; there are a few tweaks and additions which are either unmentioned by Apple, or just don’t become apparent until you actually play with the device. Well first thing you will be noticing is the packaging. The 1G Touch came in a smaller version of the iPhone box. The new one comes in a bigger version of the Nano box — clear plastic and only barely big enough to hold the iPod and accessories. Along with the Touch you get a USB cable, headphones (the old ones, not the new ones with remote control and microphone), a Universal Dock adapter and a rolled up microfiber cleaning cloth also to note the iPod touch 2G does not come with a horizontal/vertical stand for your touch also there is some bits of paper, presumably the instructions and iPod stickers. The 2G Touch feels very different. The curved back and lighter weight mean it sits a lot better in the hand. The physical buttons, too, feel different. The main, round home button is a little easier to press — you still get a positive click, but it feels like there is a lighter spring behind it. The top button is slightly more angular and feels grippier. This may be because it is now set into the smooth metal bezel instead of the old matte bezel. The volume switch is a plastic rocker with a small depression in the center which is very easy to press and shows up on the screen when playing music or with applications to increase or decrease the volume. Switching on, the speaker makes itself heard, the speaker itself isn’t as bad as expected, and makes a surprising difference to the iPod. It’s ideal for watching YouTube videos with a friend, and indoors is quite loud enough. When playing loud music from it just doesn't sound right coming from the speaker so you are better off using your headphones; but for games it’s perfect. You won’t find the speaker visible on the ipod itself; It is, as far as you can determine, tucked away inside the headphone jack socket or dock port.

Mythic Brawl is part of the Double EXP Weekend playlist, which means that you get double the exp that you would normally obtain. It's a Free-for-all match, allowing up to twelve players to be matched against each other on the Mythic map packs. The Mythic Map Pack is required to participate in this playlist.

My Thoughts*
They tell you that the hard drive does not have a fan but it clearly does because you can hear it rev up when you are using the unit unless I am mistaken please correct me. The sound is a tad bit loud but not enough to drive you insane over it. I have a wood desk and you can hear it a bit more loudly then on probubly other types of desk. Also I noticed when I had the hard drive laying on it's side it was way more louder so if you are having that issue I would just lay it flat on the rubber legs that has because it prevents the case it is in from vibrating louder against surfaces.

The unit seems to stay pretty cool when it is in a cramped place like where I have mine placed, it is surround under my iMac, my speakers and keyboard so I would say it is a pretty "cool" system. There is 1 complaint I have about the system and its the USB Cord to attach it to a computer unit; its pretty short and it has to be so close to the USB port you are going to attach it to, at most i would say its 3 feet if that; but otherwise the power cord is pretty long so no complaints about that issue.

Over all I would give this external hard drive a 9.5/10 because of the USB cord being to short; everything else is wonderful to use and just so simple.

Halo 3: Fiesta

On spawning players recieve 2 random weapons, or one if they are in first place. There are no weapons on the map. First to 50, no time limit, all difficult kills are rewarded. For 2-16 players.

Fiesta King:
This is just like king of the hill except you all have random weapons when you start out.

Fiesta Ball:
Oddball with a different name, as the rest you start out with random weapons.

This is just like juggernaut so basically you cannot go after other player in the game except the one who is "infected" or "it" id like to say but beware of people who like to kill others in the game just for fun; LIKE ME!

Fiesta Slayer:
Just like regular slayer, except random weapon changes when you start and when you die and respawn.

Halo 3: Living Dead

Alright so if your into the whole infection fiasco; killing "humans" or being a "zombie" you'll like this weekends double experience challenge on halo 3 which is called Living Dead.

What is "Infection"?
- Some players start off as zombies and seek to devour humans. 3 rounds, most points wins.

Ammunition
- The humans start off well armed, but ammunition is limited.

Alpha Zombie
- Players who start the round as zombies are more powerful than those they infect.

Hide & Seek
- Your only defense is stealth. Don't let the zombies find you!

General Tips:
1. When playing as a zombie, usually you are outmatched and win games by sheer numbers mainly. However, use of such power ups as the overshield and active camo can help dramatically. The overshield allows you to take on humans head on. Whereas one shotgun shot would kill you earlier, it becomes two, which means that you can use your sword to kill them. Sometimes, humans are so surprised when you kill them that they panic, trying to run away. Simply pick them off. The active camo is also great, especially in multi-leveled maps. Simply go over and take out multiple enemies at a time. Crouch walking works for even more stealth. On maps like last resort, the pit, and standoff with multiple levels, this can confuse and disorientate your enemy. Both powerups are key for success as a zombie.

2. Players should pick one spot on the map that is easy to defend and just stay there.

3. Give your team roles; one guy either has a sniper rifle or beam rifle and either spots the approaching zombies or picks them off, another person has an Assault Rifle or SMG and acts as a Support Gunner, another may have a BR or Carbine and serves as the 'Rifleman', and the last guy should be armed with a close range weapon like the Shotgun or Mauler.

4. NEVER go out alone, the only times a person should go out is to either recon where the zombies are or get ammunition.

5. On maps where there are vehicles, USE THEM!!! The Warthogs chaingun or the Scorpions' cannon can make short work of approaching zombies from long range. However, if the Scorpion is ambushed, the other team mates have to protect it.

6. Reload when there is a lull in the fighting, don't face a swarm of zombies with only one bullet-you can't shoot yourself in that situation.

7. If you use weapons like an Assault Rifle, fire in short controlled bursts-don't spray lead everywhere; you need those bullets.

Xbox 360/PC - Left 4 Dead Free DLC!

Valve has specified that the Left 4 Dead downloadable content will be made available for Xbox 360 users at roughly 2AM PST, with the PC version slated to be released later in the day. The free DLC pack will bring versus mode campaigns for “Death Toll” and “Dead Air”, as well as a new game option, “Survival Mode”.

Survival Mode is said to offer a faster-paced and shorter-lived gameplay to the traditional campaign by pitting players against increasingly frequent hordes of zombies on 12 specialized maps.

*Thoughts
I have downloaded the content off my Xbox as of 7am GST time and I have to say that the "Survival Mode" is actually more challenging then it looks, if you find fighting off zombies on expert was difficult then wait until you get a load of this; you have tanks, smokers, hunters and zombies coming at you from all angles. I have only played an hour or so of this new content so I will give it more of a try later on and I will be adding more to this blog soon.

Logitech LS21 Speakers

I picked up the Logitech LS21 speakers to use on my xbox 360 which i have hooked up through vga cables so i can play it off my Acer x223w lcd monitor; instead of having to share the current logitech speakers i have for my iMac computer. I was surprized to find out that they did not work with my xbox 360 since they did not have the mp3 player port “aux out” to put the sound out through the speakers; so i ended up using them for my iMac and using the ones i had hooked up from my iMac to my xbox 360 because i knew they already worked. So i guess everything worked out for the best but then if i did not already have those other speakers i would of had to bring them back. So what i guess im saying is make sure you do your research ahead of time.

Pro/Cons:
1. The sound is very loud but when it gets to much of a high pitch sound like the msn bing noise or aim noise it is a bit vibraty “if thats a word”. But for loud lower sounds it seem to work perfectly fine.

2. I find the subwoofer where the speaker is on the bottom it seems a bit to close to the floor so i would suggest having it sideways so it does not sound muffled.

3. The grey color on the 2 main speakers seems to mark up easy, i haven’t had my speakers for a week yet and i already have a mark on one them.

4. The audio connector being seperate from the speakers is another geat thing that i like and it is easy to access and very simple to use.

*NOTE: Unfortunatly it was not what i was looking for in a system so i took it back for a refund.

Edifier iF330 Plus iPod Speakers

I had these iPod speakers for about a week or a bit longer and they sound quality was actually pretty good to my surprize for such a cheap set of speakers for my iPod Touch. I bought these speakers at Walmart for $57.97 and it came with a remote control, a bag to carry the actual speaker with; not to mention it was portable also as long as you supplied the double A batteries. The package also supplied you with all the dock holders for almost all iPods that are already out, there is even a headphone jack so you can plug in other mp3 players that are not ipod (even iPod shuffle) which obviously does not use a dock connector but a headphone jack. The iF330 Plus charges your Ipod while in the dock so you do not have to worry about it running out while you are playing your music.

Pros:
1. Supplies you with mostly all dock connectors even for older iPods.
2. Remote control handy for someone moving around.
3. Carrying bag for when you want to take it on the go.
4. Easy to use.
5. Nice sound.

Cons:
1. Finger print magnet because of the gloss.
2. If the song has alot of bass it doesnt sound to good when loud.
3. Takes to many batteries.

*NOTE: Unfortunatly the product had to be taken back due to not needing it anymore.
